Promat Middle East hosted a seminar on Hotel Fires – Improving Fire Safety With Passive Fire Protection last 27th of March in Dubai, UAE, touching on different topics related to risks, consequences and solutions to fires in hotels.

The seminar was attended by 60 industry experts from international companies in the Middle East construction industry, including architectural consultants, engineering firms, hotel owners, property developers, certification bodies and installers.

Promat Business Manager and Head of Promat Training Service, Mr. Marco Antonelli, world-renowned expert in fire regulations and fire protection, explained the hazards which can be found in hotels, the properties of fire and development of fire in different scenarios, to begin with.

Mr. Antonelli went on to explain how dangerous smoke is, the behavior of people and escape routes, to emphasize on the many factors that are difficult to control and the importance for the correct containment.

He then classified the consequences of those as affecting structures, compartmentation and penetrations. For instance, the effects on steel structures and concrete, particularly the dangers of the so called “spalling effect” of heated concrete, steel deformation and collapse. He elaborated on the method that energy is released during a fire and so the dangers of combustible materials such as wood, fabric or plastic.

Promat Middle East Technical Manager, Mr. Wouter Toonder went on to present the solutions within passive fire protection, for each of the problem and hazard, with Promat systems being tested and certified, making the hotel building safer for its occupants as well as the property itself.

The seminar was very interactive, with a round of questions being posed by industry experts, while on closing the presentation, a networking and dinner events was held at the rooftop of Metropolitan Hotel.

Industry experts gave their feedback on the format and content of the event, which Promat will improve upon future occasions, and overall the attendees stated to have enjoyed the event and taken lot of useful insights for their projects and many aspects that they had not considered before.
